A scenic road winding from Marrakech into the High Atlas

Marrakech to the mountains: a first-timer’s guide

October 2, 2026 • • Guides

Getting from Marrakech into the High Atlas is part of the adventure — and easier than you might expect. Here is how a first-time visitor reaches the trailheads, and how to plan the journey around your trek.

From the airport to the medina

Most treks begin with a night in Marrakech, a short drive from Menara Airport. Your guide meets the flight and takes you to the hotel — about fifteen minutes from the city. Depending on arrival you can spend the evening in Jemaa el-Fna square or wander the souks.

On the road to Imlil

The classic gateway to the Toubkal valley is Imlil, about an hour and a half by road through the Moulay Brahim gorges and the market town of Asni. The drive climbs steadily, and the views arrive well before the mountains: red foothills, walnut groves and terraced villages.

The same road, many routes

  • Imlil and the Toubkal valley for summit treks
  • The Azzaden valley for quieter, gentler loops
  • Ikkis and the northern High Atlas for mule-supported circuits
  • From the south, the Dades and Todra gorges lead toward the desert and the dunes — the route to our Sahara Camel Trek

Stretch the trip

Marrakech works brilliantly as both the start and the finish. Many trekkers add a night or two in the city before flying home, or combine an Atlas trek with the desert. Because the airport is so close to the mountains, you can go from souk to summit in a single day.

Your booking confirmation includes exact meeting points and timings, and we adjust the transfer to your flight.
